Labeling laws in Canada are seriously fucked up.
First off, products labeled made in Canada do not have to be made in Canada. In fact products can be labeled Made In Canada if the last substantial transformation of the goods must have occurred in Canada, and at least 51% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the goods is Canadian.
Secondly, Genetically Modified products require no labeling, in fact some major grocery store chains have banned labels stating there products are GMO free, removing the right to choose from the customers.
Currently GMO labeling is not required in Canada, however, it is required in the UK and the US. Why is the Safety of US and UK customers more important that of Canadians? Why does our government not require GMO labeling?
No studies have been done to PROVE that GMO's are safe.
In fact most studies show that there is serious evidence to support the fact that GMO's are DANGEROUS.
It is estimated that 70% of the food on shelves in Canadian grocery stores contain Genetically Modified products.
BAN GMO's IN CANADA UNTIL FURTHER RESEARCH PROVES WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT THEY ARE SAFE. Which in my opinion means a permanent ban, because GMO's are not safe, both for people and the environment.
At the BARE MINIMUM we need GMO labeling in Canada so that Consumers can choose to protect themselves from this deadly experiment forced on us by large corporations, there lobbying groups and our own government. To all 3 groups I say FUCK YOU.

I do agree that labeling should be mandatory...however I do no know where you are getting your information because there is no legislation that enforces labeling in the US. They are faced with the same challenge as Canada, and more likely a larger struggle. With so many big brand companies pushing for the development of penny saving franken-foods and many US universities signing on the the GMO train it will not be easy. The US government currently does not support GMO labeling.

I am a videographer with VancouverIAM and I thought you might be interested in what the people of Vancouver are saying about the need for mandatory labeling in Canada. I also talked to some of the farmers in BC Organic and a farmer who is currently participating in roundup ready corn farming. He was just really not informed and bought into it without the extra thoughts of down the road resistance by consumers. People are starting to inquire whether their animales are fed GMO corn and the people who buy from them to sell it or less and less inclined - so I think if people keep talking - the more and more we can maybe change things around for the better.

Let me know what you think,
Thanks,

GMO's are terrible, we must all fight the people in power who let this garbage food to enter our food stores. Let everyone know, the more people who are aware, the more likely things will change.
peace.
The US does not have mandatory GMO labeling, and only this month enforced Country of Origin Labeling (legislation that has been around in some form since 2002 that is finally in effect). Furthermore, the fact that the US is willing to trade with Canada as a major importer of Canadian agricultural products is a testament to the safety of Canadian foods; the USDA only allows imports from countries whose food safety regulations are at LEAST as stringent as American standards. Also, no labeling should ever be in place until public education programs make consumers better informed of what exactly genetically modified foods are, comments like those about "Franken Foods" are born of ignorance and dramatized further by politicians and media who are similarly uninformed.
Dear anonymous,
you said,
"no labeling should ever be in place until public education programs make consumers better informed..."
???What??? What about my right to choose? I should be able to choose what goes into my body, for whatever reasons I wish, ill informed or not. Just like I am allowed to choose sugar over high fructose corn syrup even though the the corn industry says they are exactly the same, just like I am allowed to choose freshly squeezed orange juice over concentrate even though they taste the same and have the same nutrient content. Those things have to be labeled, and so should GMOs. If they are just as safe and wholesome as natural foods, the burden should be on the companies producing them to convince us, rather than to simply say the consumers are idiots and can't be trusted to make their own choices. Besides the whole 'franken foods' issues, I might choose not to eat GMOs because they contaminate natural crops, promote harmful monocultures, increase pesticide use, or perhaps because I don't want to support a bunch of greedy corporations that want to monopolize the food chain. If you aren't a shill, I suggest you check out the movie, The Future of Food. Its scary stuff.
The world according to Monsanto A must see to all how wants to know not just the danger of the GMO but a look at the business philosophy to attempt a worldwide monopoly by the use of patent, that is the scariest I believe.
